The Peer/Adler family reunion
July, 2007

Saturday night, July 7th

We (Scott & Anne, Mike, Anne and I) went downtown to see Reno's "first annual" Farmer's market. Unfortunately, it wasn't much to look at. They're trying to do what Sparks has been doing for years (very successfully, by the way). The one redeeming factor was that Doug Robertson and Company were playing and we wanted to see their act because they'd been hired to perform for us on Sunday. Surprisingly, while there we had been video'd by a local news crew and appeared later that night on TV!
PS: yes, Scott, I have Four. I had to look! ;)

Saturday night at the Silver Legacy: Scott, Mike and I saw Blues Traveler. 3rd row, front and center! Thanks, Barbie!

There he is, the man himself:
John Popper wails!

Family Reunion - July 9th, 2007

Barbie has been working on this for a couple of years. Laying the ground-work with trips around the country to visit the aunts, uncles and cousins. After not some little time a date was set and word went out that there'd be a reunion of Adlers and Peers in Reno! Phone calls were placed, emails were sent and the grapevine was going full tilt. As the date drew closer a meeting was held and duties were assigned. As you can see from the following photographs, the gathering was a hit with all that attended! There are more pictures coming (Ken, I'm looking at you!) and I'll post them here as they come in. [now updated with Josh's and Scott's pictures]

Sunday motorcycle ride

After the family reunion broke up, the boys decided to go for a ride. Josh had brought his bike up in the truck, but Woody was lacking. Fortunately, John and Susan have two Suzukis and Susan let Woody ride hers. Mike rode his classic Harley "Shovelhead", so named because the head covers look like they're made out of a shovel! As for myself, I haven't ridden for fifteen years or more. But Josh had asked me to check out the possibility of renting a bike for the weekend, so I the next time I was doing some work at Big Valley Honda I spoke with Bill Baker. He's the rental manager and just a great, all-around good guy. After some friendly conversation he showed me several models and I selected the 750 Shadow. I figured it would have enough power without being as heavy as the Gold Wing or over-powering as the 1300 Shadow. It turned out that I'd chosen well, as it handled the hills and curves with aplomb.

Mike really wanted a picture of that sunset in the smoke. Nice shot!

Father and Son ride

Monday, after everything had settled down, Josh and I took a spin. I used to have a Honda V65 Sabre (sport bike) when Josh was young and, because I worked in the casinos, my days off were in the middle of the week. Sometimes, when the weather was nice, I'd just point my bike down the road and ride.
This route was one of my favorites, because the mountains were cool, the roads undulating and sparsely populated. We left Reno and rode North on Interstate 395 to Hallelujah Junction; turning West we headed into the mountains through Chilcoot and into Vinto (both so small that you'd miss them if you blinked) where we turned South on 49 and wound our way past Loyalton and into Sierraville. Since my old favorite cafe was closed we continued on 89 into Truckee and up the hills into the Tahoe basin.
At Kings Beach we opted for the East side, which would put that beautiful view closer, on our right. Upon arriving at Incline Village we stopped for some lunch and to do some "window shopping". Afterwards, we continued around the lake to 207 (Geiger Grade) and banked our way through the turns, over the ridge and back down into the valley, then South on 206 to Genoa. After a stop for some stretching and re-hydration we cruised East on 758 to I-395 and then North into the capitol, Carson City, and on into Reno.
I have to tell you, that sharing this with my son was a dream come true!

Josh and I at Incline Village, Lake Tahoe; the food was good and there was a nice little creek behind us that bubbled along.

Josh's Yamaha V-Star and my rental Shadow 750 from Big Valley Honda

Look at that view! One of the world's most beautiful lakes.

Hey! Who are these two guys?

Josh keeps in touch. His texting ability is second to none!

I took a chance and tried to get some "action shots". Way to go!

Did we have fun? Just look at that smile on Josh's face!

We passed this sign near Wally's Hot Springs and just had to stop...

Hangin' loose near Genoa

Caught myself in this one

Josh caught himself in this one. (Actually, he's had lot's of practice! Riding, that is; not camera work.)

Here we are, again. Boy has he got that angle camera down!

See, I told you he was good!

That's real Nevada desert there!

Stopped to pick up some beer and caught Josh coolin' his heels while he watched the bikes. Anne's anniversary gift (gold and Australian opal necklace in the shape of Lake Tahoe) was in my saddlebags!

Flyin' up 395 through Washoe Valley, North of Carson City

Yes, you're the best son a father could have! I love you, Josh!

OK, enough of that. Let's have fun!

No other lake look like this!

I recently found out that the color of Lake Tahoe is primarily due to the low calcium levels. Whatever it is, it's gorgeous!

Pre-reunion trip

The week before this get-together Anne and I had gone to Colorado to visit her friend, Joyce. While we were there, Joyce and her husband Gil took us around to see some beautiful country. One of those trips was to visit J.D. (Jack Daniels) a pet bobcat that is "owned" by some of their friends.

Now THAT'S a big house cat!
